About Me
Hi there! My name is Tori Garcia and I am a senior journalism major at The University of Texas at Austin! I find joy in telling stories, more specifically, sports-related stories. To some people's surprise, sports reporting goes beyond producing game stories. I think sometimes we forget that athletes are people, too. They have life-long memories, dreams and goals. I want to be part of unveiling those stories.
My career in journalism began just before my sophomore year of college, when I joined The Daily Texan as a general sports reporter. This role quickly expanded into beat positions covering volleyball and softball. I have also contributed to several SI.com sites, including coverage for the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, and Stanford Cardinal. A pivotal point in my development came through the Sports Journalism Institute (SJI), where I was selected as a member of the 32nd class. SJI provided an intensive week of training in Arizona, learning from industry experts in sports reporting. Following this, I interned with The Dallas Morning News in Dallas, where I covered high-profile events, from the 2024 NBA Finals to the MLB All-Star Game.
In addition to my print and digital experience, I served as a broadcast journalist with Reporting Texas TV, where I independently created packages, delivered dynamic standups, and filmed VOs and VOSOTs on a variety of UT sports, including volleyball and tennis, and local events. Now, as an Editorial Fellow at Spectrum News, I am developing skills across three tracks: digital producer, multimedia journalist, and producer. These roles have expanded my ability to tell compelling stories on multiple platforms, ensuring comprehensive and engaging news coverage.
“A sportswriter's life means never sitting with your...family at the games. Still working after everyone has gone to the party...Keeping a confidence. Risking it.”
